The Walt Disney Studios, Rocket Pictures and Pathé are teaming up on the forthcoming 3D CGI animated movie Gnomeo & Juliet. The project, which had originally been slated for release under the Miramax label, will now be released under the Touchstone Pictures banner on February 11, 2011. Pathé International will be handling the film's distribution outside North America.
"Gnomeo & Juliet continues The Walt Disney Studios long, successful history with Sir Elton John," said Alan Bergman, President of The Walt Disney Studios, "and Pathé represents the ideal partner for this film in today's dynamic international marketplace."
The film is being produced by Sir Elton John's Rocket Pictures and features a number of his classic hits such as "Crocodile Rock," "Saturday Night," and "Your Song," in addition to original songs from John and longtime writing partner Bernie Taupin. Directed by Kelly Asbury (Shrek 2), Gnomeo & Juliet is a comic rip on William Shakespeare's classic tale, set in the unlikely world of ceramic garden gnomes. Produced by John's Rocket Pictures partners, David Furnish and Steve Hamilton Shaw, and Disney's Baker Bloodworth, the film features voice talents including James McAvoy, Emily Blunt, Michael Caine, Maggie Smith, Jason Statham, Patrick Stewart, Matt Lucas and Ashley Jenson.
"I am very pleased to be continuing my successful relationship with The Walt Disney Studios and am looking forward to working with Pathé internationally" said John, adding "I am excited to get this movie in front of audiences. I know they'll love it as much as I do."
Francois Ivernel, Executive Vice-President of Pathé, stated: "We are delighted to be in partnership with Rocket and Disney and to have the opportunity to bring this magical movie to the broadest of international audiences."
